Hazing

a look at hidden rites

Why a Page on Hazing?

While being a fratertnity or sorority member can be one of the most rewarding experience for many students on campus, hazing is a hidden and serious issue that undermines the values that are an intergral part of all Greek letter organizations. Though hazing is not a unique issue to the College, or to fraterntiy and sorority life, we believe it is important to educate folks in a process to eliminate these behaviors.

Who Should Use This Page?

This page is designed to be a resource for students, staff, faculty, alumni, parents and others interested in learning about hazing within fraternity and sorority life at the College of Charleston. Since hazing is a national problem that occurs in high schools, colleges, and other settings, this information may be useful to visitors as well.

Important Things to Know:

  • Hazing is a violation of College of Charleston policies and South Carolina State Law.
  • Hazing takes various forms, but typically involves physical risks or mental distress.
  • Hazing can cause significant harm to individuals, organizations, and the COllege community.
  • Hazing has occured on campus at the College of Charleston.
  • Organizations that haze often view it as positive and necessary.
  • Organizations that haze can achieve the positive outcomes they seek from hazing through non-hazing means.

What Can You Do?

First, and foremost, if you are aware of hazing behaviors occuring please report these behaviors to the Greek Life Office. It is important for all hazing behaviors to be addressed because they are not what the College or the Greek Community stand for and are detrmental to both. You can also educate yourself and others about what hazing is and what it looks like because the more we can recognize behaviors as hazing the better we can all be at addressing these behaviors.
